What is squash?
The basis of squash is very simple.
You play it in a room (or court) with a racket and ball, and the aim is to move your opponent around the court by hitting the ball to where it’s difficult to get. The ball is hit onto the front wall and must stay below the top red line, and above the bottom line. Hitting the ball below the line during a ralley is referred to as ‘down’ and above the line is ‘out’. Don’t ask me why…

To start a ralley, one play stands in the service box (1) and hits the ball between the top line and the middle line on the front wall. The ball must then travel over the line running across the middle of the court (tee-line). This is the ‘serve’ and thus begins the ralley.
Should the server win the ralley, then they will then serve again from the other service box, and alternate between the two. They will keep doing this until the opponent wins a ralley, and then they too must use alternate service boxes.
There are various shots to play, in an attempt to out-fox your opponent. The more basic ones are shown below…

Scoring points is fairly simple too. In an English Scoring game, you only get a point if you won the ralley and served at the start. If you won the ralley but didnt serve, then you have to win the next ralley too, before you get a point. In an American Scoring game, you get a point when you win a ralley, regardless of who served.

This is interesting! I prefer badminton though; far more aggressive

Badminton is about as aggresive as an afternoon scrabble session at the old folks home compared to squash.
Squash players share the same court space..Aggresive!
Which hurts more, getting hit by a squash ball or a shuttlecock…no contest there!
Heavier racket Grrr!
Which makes more noise? Flip Flop or THWACK!
I could go on… 4-0 to Squash

I agree Mark. Having been away from playing for three months, there’s nothing quite like getting back on court again this evening. Miss it so badly when I dont play
